THE LORD’S
(MODEL/SAMPLE) PRAYER
(Matthew
6:9-13) “After this manner therefore
pray ye: Our Father which art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in Earth, as it is
in Heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our debts, as
we forgive our debtors. And lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.
Amen.”
(Luke 11:2-4) “And he said unto them, When ye pray, say,
Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be
done, as in Heaven, so in Earth. Give
us day by day our daily bread. And
forgive our sins: for we also forgive
every one that is indebted to us. And
lead us not into temptation; but deliver
us from evil.”
REASONS NOT
TO HAVE A CHORAL RECITATION OF THIS PRAYER:
1. No direct command to do it in the NT (gospels and letters to churches).
2. No examples of individuals or congregations doing it in the NT.
3. If the intent was a recitation, then why do Matthew and Luke differ in their text?
4. The Bible does not call it “The Lord’s Prayer”
5. This model prayer leaves out other instructions concerning prayer and other items for which we are to pray.
6. Jesus said, “after this manner” and not “in these exact words”
7. The phrase “thy kingdom come” is obsolete
a. Kingdom coming: (Mark 1:15, 9:1; Matthew 3:2, 4:17, 10:7)
b. Kingdom came: (Colossians 1:13; Hebrews 12:28)
8. Jesus prayed many other times; therefore, why label this one “The Lord’s Prayer”?
OTHER TIMES JESUS PRAYED
1. (Luke 3:21) “having been baptized, and praying”
2. (Luke 5:16) “in the deserts, and prayed”
3. (Luke 6:12) “continued all night in prayer… he chose from them 12”
4. (Mark 6:41) “he looked up into Heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves”
5. (Luke 9:18) “as he was praying”
6. (Luke 9:29) “as he was praying”
7. (Luke 11:1) “as he was praying in a certain place”
8. (John 17:1-26) (1) “lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father…”
9. (Luke 22:19) “And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it”
10. (Luke 22:41) “he kneeled down and prayed… Father…”
11. (Luke 23:34) “And Jesus said, Father, forgive them”
SOMEONE SAYS,
“TEACH ME TO PRAY.” Here’s a form/model/suggestion/outline:
1. Invocation: “Our Father which art in Heaven”
2. Adoration: “hallowed be Thy name”
3. Thanks: (2 Thessalonians 1:3; 2 Timothy 1:3) Count your many blessings, name them.
4. Ask: “give us this day our daily bread”
5. Confession: “forgive us our trespasses”
6. Submission: (Matthew 26:42) “… thy will be done.”
7. Close: “in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
